Now you may be asking yourself this. Why don’t I just buy a Sony PXW-FS7?
Why do I want to buy a Panasonic EVA1?
There are plenty of blogs and videos on the web and I could go through all the specs and side by side it with the FS7 but codecs aside it really boils down to 2 things! One for and one against.
Lens Mount: I’ve said this before of Canon and now it goes for the EVA. By choosing an EF Mount camera you are placing your flag definitely in the EF Lens camp. The flange back distance of the EF Mount makes it very very nearly impossible to adapt it to a different lens type. The Sony E Mount with it’s very minimal flange back distance makes it easy to adapt to nearly every type of lens. Most importantly EF, PL, B4 and of course E Mount such as the Fujinon MK Zooms. So the EF Lens mount on the EVA could be seen as a negative unless of course you have a wide range of EF glass in which case you’d be made up!
Dual ISO: Even though you just glazed over, this is the really important bit! The EVA1 has two native ISOs, 800 and 2500. This means that when you set the camera to 2500 it has the same Signal to Noise ratio as when you were at native 800, which is like pumping in a load of gain but not getting any more noise. So in lower light level situations you can use the higher ISO base setting without any loss of quality. This would suit Productions where there’s no or limited budget for lighting.
I could of course made a video or written pages on the benefits of the different Codecs, how fabulous the auto focus functions are and so on but in reality the
EVA1 has come to the party to usurp the
Sony FS7. Dual ISO is the distinguishing difference and the decision to purchase a
EVA1 lies here!
