Rigging the Sony BURANO: An Early Preview into Accessories

With the release of the new Sony Burano cinema camera, it becomes evident that this is the camera that many have eagerly anticipated. One of the advantages of the Burano lies in its modular design, allowing rigging options for various shooting scenarios. Whether you are a rental house outfitting your fleet or an owner-operator, prioritizing reliability and straightforward solutions that don't consume time or prove finicky on set is essential.

In just slightly over a week since its release (as of the time of this writing), there have already been several noteworthy accessories announced for the BURANO, and undoubtedly, many more will surface in the weeks and months ahead.

Sony

Sony has introduced two new media cards. The ultra-high-speed 1TB and 2TB CFexpress Type B cards, boasting an impressive 1850MB/s read speed and 1750MB/s write speed, are intended for 8K X-OCN (LT) recording. For those familiar with the Sony FX9 or FX6 handgrip, the new GP-VR100 optional BURANO handgrip, which offers identical functionality to its FX9 and FX6 counterparts, opens doors to a multitude of shooting styles. Additionally, if you have worked with Sony's UWP-D range of wireless mics, you can harness audio channels 3 and 4 by using the original FX9 handle (available as a spare part).

Power Distribution

It is a rare occurrence when you solely need to power the camera; everything from compact monitors to wireless links and focus systems demands power. While not officially confirmed, it appears that both Wooden Camera (D-Box) and Hawk-Woods are poised to launch comprehensive power solutions to cater to your every need.

Base Plates and Cheese Plates

There are currently no new base plates from Vocas but there is no need, as the ever-popular 0305-2200-02 base plate is still worth considering. It features an extra-soft shoulder pad, sliding dovetail for precise balance adjustments, and 15mm bars in both the front and rear. Vocas also offers specific BURANO rear side cheese plates and a top cheese plate featuring an integrated dovetail for handle attachment.

Chroziel expands its BURANO product range with a lightweight support base plate, accompanied by a rear side cheese plate, a top cheese plate with 15mm rods, and a front side bracket that securely mounts into the top plate, effectively creating a half-cage system.

Wooden Camera, although yet to make an official launch, previews a comprehensive system encompassing front cheese plates (both left and right sides), top cheese plates, and a half/full handle system.

Bright Tangerine is yet to announce its BURANO solutions. It remains to be seen as to whether they will incorporate their innovative KASBAH system, which provides multiple density zones in a single shoulder pad or handgrip, or their Axl EVF mount solution.

Endless Configuration Possibilities

The BURANO, with its versatility, offers infinite configuration possibilities, from nimble run-and-gun setups to fully-fledged studio arrangements. Handgrips, handles, and bridge plates—the options are endless. If you find yourself unsure or overwhelmed by the choices available, do not hesitate to get in touch, and together, we can build a rig tailored to your specific needs.
