Is there a way forward for our industry?
Watching the Andrew Marr show on Sunday they interviewed Jed Mercurio the Writer/Director for Line Of Duty. He was doubtful that production would restart this year. He cited that Test/Trace/Isolate was required and that production couldn’t work within a bubble. Cast and crew would need to go home. My question is, do they really? Why can’t some productions work within a bubble if testing is available. I’m not suggesting it would be easy in any shape or form. For drama and features to start up this year perhaps something a bit drastic has to be considered. Whilst it doesn’t matter to the big stars and the people with enough money to wait this out, there are lots of businesses and people in the industry that need to start earning again!
Speaking with some Natural History Productions there is concern over travel if they have to self isolate for two weeks when they get back. Now, as with all great disasters, technology development and use accelerates rapidly. It is possible to work from isolation and a good workflow with quality offline material means the production process and viewing and sharing rushes is very possible. I’m sure there’s greater minds than mine working on this but we need a way forward for our industry. True, crews can work to a code of practice, the difficulty is the talent and post.
