IBC 2017 - Panasonic AU-EVA1 Camera
Want to find out about the Panasonic EVA1? Read on
The news from Panasonic is very exciting - the new EVA1 with 5.7k 35mm sensor, dual sensitivity ISO & 4K 10 bit 4:2:2 & RAW - what is not to like! Lets take a look at what the EVA1 promises!
Key features
5.7K Super 35mm sensor (5720 x 3016 active resolution)
14 stops of dynamic range
Dual-native ISO sensitivity at both 800 and 2500
EF Mount
4K 10-bit 4:2:2 internal recording and RAW output via external recorder
The Panasonic AU-EVA1 with its 5.7K Super 35mm sensor is tailor-made for handheld shooting having been designed to be ‘built-up’ or ‘stripped back’ to support a wide array of application thanks to its single-operation ergonomics – commercials, documentary and music video production to name just a few.
5.7K Super 35mm Sensor
EVA1 contains a brand-new 5.7K Super-35mm sensor for the EVA1. What this means is that the camera has almost twice as many pixels at 4K due to its 5720 x 3016 active resolution, which results in the sensor delivering 17.25 million pixels. Being able to produce images that are beyond 4K means that the camera operator will be able to easily down-sample to 4K, UHD, 2K and even 720p. Not only doing this deliver a more colour-rich and detailed image, it also increases the camera’s sensitivity levels, which sits at 14 stops of dynamic range.
Dual-Native ISO sensitivity at both 800 and 2500
This unique technology was first introduced in the flagship VariCam line-up, and utilises a process that allows the sensor to be read in a fundamentally different way without degrading the image. This results in a camera that can switch from a standard sensitivity to a high sensitivity whilst maintaining the same dynamic range and V-Log Curve without any electronic gain. This opens up greater shooting options for a camera operator to use less light on set whilst also allowing for a greater variety of artistic choice.
V-Log/V-Gamut
The ability to capture both accurate colours and rich skin tones is a must for any camera operator. This is supported with EVA1 thanks to the ability of shooting V-Log in-camera. V-Log delivers a very flat image whilst maintaining all of the colour information within the image, meaning that there is a greater level of play when the images are put through the postproduction process. V-Log also has log curve characteristics that are somewhat reminiscent of negative film. The Super 35mm sensor achieves a wide colour gamut (V-Gamut), which is its optimum colour space and achieves a colour space that is wider than BT.2020, making EVA1 ready for HDR content delivery.
High Frame-Rate Recording
Camera operators can choose between MOV wrapped codecs up to 10-bit 422 even in 4K, as well as AVCHD. Capturing internally in 4K, UHD, 2K, Full HD and HD, the EVA1 offers up to 59.94fps/50fps for 4K/UHD, up to 120fps/100fps for 2K/Full HD (without cropping), or 240fps/200fps (4/3-type cropped area) for high-speed capturing.
Run & Gun Ergonomics
The Panasonic EVA1 has ultimately been designed for ‘run-and-gun’- type production in allowing camera operators to either build up or strip down the camera depending on the shoot. The camera body weighs in at only 1.2kg with a compact form factor (17cms H x 13.5cms W x 13.3cms D) whilst there are a multitude of mounting holes across the camera body for building the camera up.
The top-handle can also be removed, whilst the hand-grip can be repositioned or taken off completely to create a compact form factor ideal for rigging the camera into drones, gimbles and jibs. This ultimately gives camera operators greater flexibility in the quest for smoother and more complex scene-shooting. The EVA1 has a 3.5-type LCD screen touch panel for menu selections, image zoom positioning and playback controls. The LCD also has an adjustable backlight control, including a Power LCD mode for bright viewing positions. The adjustable handgrip meanwhile offers several controls including Menu, Rec start/stop, Iris and two user buttons.
4K-capable video outputs in both HDMI and SDI are supported and each can be adjusted separately, allowing a HD feed to a viewfinder or an external monitor for example whilst a 4K feed can be sent to an outbound recorder or monitor. Timecode in and out are also supported, whilst the EVA1 offers dual-balanced XLR audio inputs with Dolby Audio*. EVA1 will also include several professional imaging tools that include peaking, image zoom, waveform and zebras.
With the addition of an AJ-WM50 wi-fi adapter, all menu functionality from the EVA1 can be controlled remotely via our dedicated application for a smart phone or tablet within the iOS or Android operating systems. With both the ND and IR Cut filters being electronic, the wireless remote control app will also be able to control these functionalities and therefore further enhances operability of the camera when built-up on drones or jibs for examples.

Low-Cost Media
EVA1 records to two SD card slots, with the option to capture footage with relay recording (continuous record), or Simul Rec (simultaneous dual record), whilst there is also one-shot record which enables single-frame video for stop-motion capture.
EF-Mount Lenses
EVA1 utilises a native EF-mount which opens up the choice of lenses for EVA1 to a great extent be it cine, fixed focal, macro or zoom lenses depending on the nature of the production.
Electronic Image Stabilisation (EIS) and Integrated ND Filters
Electronic Image Stabilisation (EIS) is employed to compensate for camera shake and blurring, which will help smooth out handheld or shoulder-mount shots on documentary or run-and-gun projects for example. Behind the lens mount, an integrated ND filter wheel in 2, 4, and 6 stops allows for precise exposure control. The Panasonic EVA1 also allows the IR Cut filter to be swung out of the path to the sensor at the push of a button. Unique photographic effects and night vision imagery are possible with this control over infrared.
