Experimenting with a 16K 200MP Sensor Camera
Nikolas Moldenhauer from Media Division builds a 200 Megapixels sensor and experiments with super high image quality. This insanely large sensor is double the size of an IMAX and creates an image quality that is over 16K in resolution!
But what is the real advantage of a camera with a sensor that big? How does it compare to the works of directors who love shooting in large format film? Moldenhauer answers these questions in an interview with Newsshooter, but one thing that immediately springs to mind are the aesthetic possibilities.
Directors like Kubrick and Nolan are fans of the large film format that create a particular brand of big screen spectaculars. Works such as 2001: A Space Odyssey and the more recent Dunkirk. These films leave a stark impression on many audience goers for the sheer detail of colour and bringing to life a sort of hyper realism. Others argue large format filmmaking might be a bit of a gimmick and Moldenhauer in his video above even suggests it may just be a marketing ploy, but lovers of 65mm films will vehemently swear to the beauty of the format.
One can't deny the aesthetic merit of the aforementioned filmmakers. Watching Media Devision's video, you will also be excited to see the level of detail kept when zooming out. And even though we doubt this type of camera will be used in the near future, it is still fun watching people tinker with it if just for fun!
For now we will leave you with this little experiment and let you decide whether large format film has aesthetic merit or is just a cheap gimmick.
