Cameraman of the Month for May - Graham Maunder

graham maunder
Name: Graham Maunder
Job Title: Director of Photography / Lighting cameraman
Filmography:(Summary will do) I started my TV life at the BBC, based at Television Centre where I was fortunate enough to learn my craft under the tutelage of Peter Ware and Ron Green – an amazing start for me.After the BBC, I moved to TVI then Trilion Video until starting up Awfully Nice Video in 1988.During that time I have worked on everything from comedy shows, sit-coms, documentaries, factual and sporting events for UK and US networks and many independent production companies.I have always tried to be at the forefront of the technology changes and have also specialised in skiing, aerial and motorbike camerawork.Recent works include ‘Ewan McGregor -Cold Chain Mission’ for BBC2/BBC HD (Which won a Guild of TV Cameraman award) inserts for Comic Relief and Text Santa and multiple promos for Sky.Recently I have started filming for UNICEF to help with their fundraising

Q1: What’s the best thing you’ve ever watched?
I enjoy going to the cinema regularly and would love to have the budget that accompanies some of the films! TV wise I got really hooked on Homeland but the best thing I’ve ever watched had to be when I was at Old Trafford to see Man Utd winning their first premiership title in May 1993! It had been a long wait!
Q2. Who was your idol when you were growing up or who is your idol now?
Much to my Mum’s horror it was George Best
Q3. What was the first camera you ever bought or used?
My dad was a keen photographer and influenced my early years in photography. I remember saving long and hard to buy an Agfa Gevaert 35mm stills camera that I used with a mixture of Black & White and Colour reversal (‘slide’) films
Q4. What is your favourite camera and why?
A month ago I would have said my Alexa but now I’m loving my Sony F55 – the pictures are amazing and the ability to change between so many formats and codecs is great. Really looking forward to the update to be able to do high speed.
Q5. What’s the most bizarre/funniest/favourite thing to happen whilst on a shoot?
Over the years there have been many incidents to bore my grandchildren with in later life but one of the recent highlights was at the London 2012 Olympics when Usain Bolt grabbed a stills photographer’s camera after he had won the 200m and took a picture of me filming him.
Q6. What’s your favourite or worst place to film and why?
I love travelling and going to new countries and experiencing different cultures and finding new angles. Some of the places I have been to with UNICEF are really horrific but make for some great images. The worst places are hotel rooms and offices with no or little natural light that people have allegedly recced where you can hardly fit yourself in let alone some lights and a camera!
Q7. Who is the most interesting person you have worked with?
Sir David Attenborough, Michael Palin for their amazing knowledge and experiences; Prince Charles for his views on the eco world. Ewan McGregor for his campfire building skills!
Q8. Name one unnecessary item that you cannot do without on a shoot?
A Mars bar!
Q9. What would you like to film that you haven’t already?
I would relish the chance to go into space (if you’re reading this Mr. Branson!) but the great thing about this industry is that every day, every job and every new bit of technology brings a new challenge and means you never stop learning.
Q10. What job would you be doing if you couldn’t do what you do now?
When I left school I was accepted on the British Airways pilot training programme but my start date was deferred twice by a year each time as they realised they already had too many trained pilots. I took the opportunity to join the BBC and by the time BA started training again I was enjoying my new career too much to change!
Q11. What’s one piece of advice you would give to an aspiring Cameraman?
Never give up trying to achieve your goal and always be polite and on-time.  To see more about Graham visit his website  Awfully Nice Video Company Awfully nice
