Actors Strike

Last Thursday saw the SAG-AFTRA union call a strike in the USA basically halting productions across the country. Whilst Equity the UK sister Union of SAG-AFTRA has not called for a strike and in fact it being unlawful for UK actors to strike, many productions have shut down across the UK. Whilst these actors have made a choice to strike or not work there is a massive effect on other businesses, crew, electricians, hire companies, equipment dealers, catering, logistics, wardrobe, props, the list goes on. What was a difficult year anyway has turned into a disastrous one for some people.

Statement from Equity.

We have been advised by SAG-AFTRA that its strike is lawful according to United States law, but we have been advised by our UK lawyers that it is not lawful under United Kingdom law. Consequently, a performer joining the strike (or refusing to cross a picket line) in the UK will have no protection against being dismissed or sued for breach of contract by the producer or the engager. Likewise, if Equity encourages anyone to join the strike or not cross a picket line, Equity itself will be acting unlawfully and hence liable for damages or an injunction.
